Thousands of children in the United States are awaiting adoption. The National Adoption Center and the Department of Health and Human Services have teamed to develop a Website which offers photographs and descriptions of approximately 3000 children across the country. Sadly, most of these children aren't desirable for couples seeking to adopt. Many are of school age and may have physical, emotional or intellectual challenges. But all are children in need of loving and understanding parents.

Diabetes Update - August 2003
|
In April of this year, I lost my lower left leg to a diabetic complication. Although working to prepare myself for a prosthetic limb, it is not a happy situation. My humor and purpose still remain firm in a sense, yet are somewhat weakened by a loss of individuality as I depend on others for mobility and daily care. And loss of individuality leads to negative feelings. For Thirty years I counseled others in the art of positive thinking. Now it is time to follow my own counsel. To allow for the positive to override the negative. Yes, I'll walk again soon. I'll place the wheelchair in a corner, gratefully shake the hands of those medical professionals who have guided me along the way to recovery, kiss affectionately good-bye the women who have helped me with my daily care. And I'll stand and walk, perhaps with a cane but nevertheless walk, unrestrained by pessimistic thought. The above is not meant as a self-felicitating aid to my ego, for there are many worse off than I. Many who may never derive pleasure in independence. On the contrary, this is written as an admonition to anyone suspecting they may have even the beginning stages of diabetes. Please! See a doctor! Stop IT, before it stops YOU! Below, I've listed some warning symptoms for both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes:
Frequent urination.
Excessive thirst.
Extreme hunger.
Unusual weight loss.
Increased fatigue.
Irritability.
Blurred vision. ~Doc Jim~

Diabetes Update - September 2003
|
I'm walking on a prosthetic "practice leg," with the help of a crutch and a hand held out by my Physical Therapist or Home Care Provider for possible support. Although unsteady at times, I try not to grab the hand. But just the thought that it is there gives me a subjective lift. The walker I've used for so many weeks is now folded and leaning against a wall in my bedroom. The wheelchair is still in use, and probably will be for some time. Nevertheless, I am elated. I'm making progress. ~Doc Jim~

Diabetes Update - October 2003
|
Well, a little setback. At the end of September I developed a blister the size of a half-dollar on the bottom of my stump, which made it impossible to wear and practice with my artificial leg. This sat me in my wheelchair and forced again the use of my walker. On October 13th (one week before scheduled), I received consent to put the leg back on. Though I still can't practice walking with it for more than five minutes at a time, and the wheelchair and walker are still in full use, everything is looking up once more....When younger, I was called "Teddybear" by the women and "Bear" by the men. But now I am like an old bear; a growling, ugly old bear. I think "cabin fever" is beginning to set in. If not for my Website, I'd feel completely use- less. Is pessimism displacing optimism? Yes! And it has got to stop! ~Doc Jim~

Diabetes Update - February 2006
|
Although progress is extremely slow, my mind remains active going into this third physically challenged year. At sixty-three, I don't expect to walk away from my wheelchair as spryly as hoped. But optimism has returned with the aid of those around me. They've brought me back to the realization that I.Q. nimbleness can far exceed physical agility. ~Doc Jim~
